Pepper Adams - The Cool Sound Of Pepper Adams (1957) (eac-log-cover)

Pepper Adams - The Cool Sound Of Pepper Adams (1957)
jazz | 1cd | eac-flac-cue-log-cover | 190MB
Savoy / Denon remaster | mini LP
Allmusic:
The Cool Sound of Pepper Adams is the kind of record one buys for its remarkable cover art (depicting a flame-haired beauty cupping a seashell to her ear) only to discover the music contained therein is just as spellbinding. A wonderfully soulful session featuring striking contributions from pianist Hank Jones and drummer Elvin Jones, its four lengthy cuts pulsate with energy and invention. Despite complementing Adams' baritone leads with Bernard McKinney's euphonium, the music never sounds bloated. Instead, it's supple and slinky, with a dexterity that's utterly winning. Still, there's no mistaking the physicality of Adams' tone. Songs like "Bloos, Blooze, Blues" and "Like…What Is This?" are as rich and smooth as crushed velvet.

Tracks
-1. "Bloos, Blooze, Blues" - V.P. Doved - 10:17
-2. "Settin' Red" - McKinney - 7:27
-3. "Like, What Is This?" - McKinney - 7:39
-4. "Skippy" - Awaodley - 7:47

Personnel:
*Pepper Adams (Sax (Baritone)
*Elvin Jones (Drums)
*Hank Jones (Piano)

Allmusic:
In 1958, Pepper Adams and Donald Byrd were pivotal members of a sextet led by Chicago tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin. They also formed their own quintet with fellow Detroiters Doug Watkins and Elvin Jones, and the then-rising star Bobby Timmons as the fifth wheel. This album, one of the first club dates recorded for the Riverside label, may have presented logistic problems with the acoustics, mic placements, and reel to reel tape technology, but there were no such issues with the extraordinary music contained on this effort. A tight, in tune and exciting ensemble, Adams and Byrd laid it all out for this single 39-minute set of modern jazz at the Five Spot Café in New York City. The symmetry between the witty and raw baritone sax of Adams and Byrd's stirring and sometimes strained trumpet is the stuff of legends, and the hallmark of the bop to hard bop era. Contained on this album are two definitive all-time great selections -- "The Long Two/Four" and especially "Hastings Street Bounce" -- the former with a march intro from Jones setting up a sharp staccato hard line melody with trumpet fills and the precise comping of Timmons, the latter a definitive groovy soul strut shuffle with one of the more hummable and memorable melodies ever, both pieces featuring rousing solos, and both tracks over ten minutes of jam power. Their theme "'Tis" penned by Thad Jones is a short, clipped unison bop which is a bit off minor, and showcases the unique instrumental voices of the frontmen. "Yourna," written by Byrd, and the standard "You're My Thrill" are the ballads tossed in for good measure and they showcase a yearning trumpet or somber pining baritone respectively. There's a palpable sense of democracy, shared values, and above all, balance in this band of expert modern jazz pioneers. It's a keeper, and one of the best recordings of any band in this era. The liner notes written by producer Orrin Keepnews suggests this was a "full night's work," perhaps for him and the band, as the "10 to 4" represents their time on the bandstand -- with breaks -- from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. This gig reportedly lasted for nearly two months during the spring of 1958, so isn't there anything else in the can to supplement what is here?

Tracks:
-1 'Tis (Theme) 5:42
-2 You're My Thrill 4:55
-3 The Long Two/Four 10:27
-4 Hastings Street Bounce 11:08
-5 Yourna 7:00

Personnel:
*Baritone Saxophone - Pepper Adams
*Bass - Doug Watkins
*Drums - Elvin Jones
*Piano - Bobby Timmons
*Trumpet - Donald Byrd (tracks: 1, 3 to 5)

Donald Byrd & Pepper Adams - The Complete Blue Note D Byrd/P Adams Studio Sessions (MOSAIC)

Centered around the Byrd/Adams Blue Note dates Byrd in Hand, Chant, Royal Flush, The Cat Walk, and Off to the Races, Mosaic's Complete Blue Note Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams Studio Sessions finds the Detroit natives at the top of their game during 1959-1962. Writing and performing some of the most original and tight hard bop around, Byrd and Adams led a variety of combos that featured the likes of Herbie Hancock (his first session), Wynton Kelly, Duke Pearson (who also contributed material), Charlie Rouse, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins. From distinct covers ("Lover Come Back to Me") to seamlessly complex originals ("Bronze Dance"), Byrd's pure-toned trumpet and Adams' angular baritone unexpectedly make a perfect match. And beyond a wealth of sides that prove the point, the collection also features -- in typically thorough and classy Mosaic fashion -- some stunning session photos by Blue Note lensman Francis Wolff and an extensive essay by Bob Blumenthal. A hard bop experience of the highest order.

Baritonist Pepper Adams and tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims (who rarely performed together) make a surprisingly compatible team on this CD reissue of a 1968 Prestige session. With pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Elvin Jones forming a fairly adventurous rhythm section, Pepper and Sims sound inspired on material that includes obscurities by Flanagan, Thad Jones and Adams in addition to the Ellington-Strayhorn ballad "Star-Crossed Lovers" and a pair of Joe Henderson songs. The setting is more advanced than usual for Sims, who rises to the challenge

Tracks:
1. Inanout – 5:47
2. The Star-Crossed Lovers – 3:54
3. Cindy’s Tune – 5:58
4. Serenity – 6:27

8. Verdandi - 3:57
