Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker - Carnegie Hall Concert (SBM 24kt Gold) (1974)

Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker - Carnegie Hall Concert (1974)

EPIC | SBM 24kt Gold
Allmusic:
At this 1974 concert baritonist Gerry Mulligan and trumpeter Chet Baker had one of their very rare reunions; it would be only the second and final time that they recorded together after Mulligan's original quartet broke up in 1953. Oddly enough, a fairly contemporary rhythm section was used (keyboardist Bob James, vibraphonist Dave Samuels, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Harvey Mason, and in one of his first recordings, guitarist John Scofield). However, some of the old magic was still there between the horns, and in addition to two of Mulligan's newer tunes, this set (the first of two volumes) also includes fresh versions of "Line for Lyons" and "My Funny Valentine."

Tracks

-1. "Line For Lyons" 8:16
-2. "Margarine" 6:00

AMG:
During a 1954 trip to Europe Gerry Mulligan played several concerts in Paris at the Salle Pleyel to enthusiastic crowds, excerpts from which are heard on this CD and a second volume, issued separately. The baritone saxophonist is joined by one of his most stimulating musical partners, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer; the quartet's rhythm section includes bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Frank Isola (who sticks to brushes). Mulligan does his best to introduce most of the tunes in halting French to the appreciation of the audience. Mulligan and Brookmeyer work magic together as they alternate between taking the lead and providing backgrounds for one another, while also engaging in some terrific counterpoint. The set includes standards, classic jazz tunes and Mulligan's originals, all of which delight the audience. It is almost impossible to name all of the highlights within this disc, though "Bernie's Tune" (with a playful detour into a circus theme), Mulligan's loping "Walkin' Shoes" and cool "Soft Shoe" as well as "My Funny Valentine," which rivals his famous recording with trumpeter Chet Baker. This CD and its companion volume should be considered among Gerry Mulligan's most essential recordings.

AMG:
Gerry Mulligan was certainly busy in December 1957. During a two-week period, the baritonist recorded a reunion album with trumpeter Chet Baker, documented a set of his songs with an octet that featured five top saxophonists, recorded a very obscure set with a sextet that included four strings, and cut most of an album in which his quartet teamed up with singer Annie Ross. This limited-edition three-CD set contains all of the music plus alternate takes and the last part of the Ross album, which was recorded nine months later with trumpeter Art Farmer in Baker's spot. The reunion with Baker, one of only two times when Mulligan and the trumpeter got back together (the other was a 1970s concert), has some of the old magic of the famous 1951-1952 pianoless quartet. Surprisingly, Baker sounds reluctant to play behind Mulligan's solos, but the baritonist happily harmonizes behind the trumpeter. The saxophone date features Mulligan's songs arranged by Bill Holman and featuring Allen Eager (in his last high-quality date), Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Lee Konitz in excellent form. It is surprising that the Mulligan with strings set did not come out for decades, for the nine songs (which have Mulligan joined by violin, cello, guitar, bass, and drums) are given spirited and swinging treatments. Annie Ross Sings a Song of Mulligan was one of the singer's finest albums away from Lambert, Hendricks & Ross and she mixes in perfectly with the two versions of Mulligan's quartet. Collectors who do not already own most of this music are well advised to acquire this perfectly conceived reissue, a month in the life of the great Gerry Mulligan.

In the late 1950s/early '60s, baritonist Gerry Mulligan participated in several recorded "meetings" with jazz musicians whom he admired. For this set (reissued on CD in the OJC series), Mulligan teams up with pianist Thelonious Monk (who shares co-leadership), bassist Wilbur Ware, and drummer Shadow Wilson on a surprisingly successful date. Monk and Mulligan blend together quite well on what was essentially Thelonious' repertoire of the era including "'Round Midnight," "Rhythm-A-Ning," "Sweet and Lovely," and "I Mean You."

Scott Yanow:
Although baritonist Gerry Mulligan is listed as the leader of this date, vocalist Jane Duboc is really the main star. The Brazilian-oriented set consists of eight Mulligan originals (including "Tema Pra Jobim," which finds him switching to piano, and "Willow Tree") and three other numbers, with "Wave" being the only standard. Duboc sings well, although her voice never sticks in one's mind, and Mulligan has short solos and mostly sticks to the background; they are joined by a couple of Brazilian rhythm sections. Pleasant music that mostly stands out as a historical curiosity in Gerry Mulligan's discography.

Recorded at Clinton Recording Studios, Studio A, New York from July 5-7, 1993.

Personnel: Jane Duboc (vocals); Emanuel Moreira (guitar); Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone); Clifford Korman, Charlie Ernst (piano); Duduka Da Fonseca, Peter Grant (drums); Norberto Goldberg, Valtinho Anastacio (percussion).
Arranger: Gerry Mulligan.

Gerry Mulligan - What Is There To Say (1959)
jazz | 1CD | EAC Rip | FLAC+CUE+LOG | cover
Columbia/Legacy | RAR +5% recovery | 300MB

Review (AMG):
The last of the pianoless quartet albums that Gerry Mulligan recorded in the 1950s is one of the best, featuring the complementary trumpet of Art Farmer, bassist Bill Crow, and drummer Dave Bailey along with the baritonist/leader. This recording is a little skimpy on playing time but makes every moment count. Virtually every selection is memorable, with "What Is There to Say," "Just in Time," "Festive Minor," "My Funny Valentine," and "Utter Chaos" being the high points. Highly recommended both to Mulligan collectors and to jazz listeners who are just discovering the great baritonist.

1. "What Is There to Say?" – 4:03
2. "Just in Time" – 4:11
3. "News from Blueport" – 5:03
4. "Festive Minor" – 6:14
5. "As Catch Can" – 3:54
